Whenever I travel outside the Northwest and people hear that I’m from the Seattle area, the next words out of their mouth are invariably….”how do you stand all that rain”? I’ve learned over the years that I’m not going to convince them but I always love the opportunity to share “the other side” of the Puget Sound region. Those of us who love it here, know that a weekend like this makes up for a few weeks of gray and spitting rain….and then some! Where To Recycle Holiday Packaging

Out with the Old, in with the New….and I don’t mean the new year. Every year, post Christmas, I feel the need to purge and streamline. Maybe it’s the idea of bringing more “stuff” into the house without getting rid those things no longer needed. The Living room of our Maple Valley home has returned to some semblance of normalcy today, although we still have some boxes, Styrofoam and several bags of wrapping paper to dispose of properly. The wrapping paper is easy, that can go in the normal recycle. But what about everything else? Batteries, old cameras, furniture that may or may not be charity-worthy? According to King County’s website, these are the items which are OK to go into the normal recycle: plastic, aluminum, glass, paper & plastic and scrap metal (size retrictions so check the website). Note that the packaging items does NOT include Styrofoam packaging. These can be taken to V&G Recycling in Renton. Want to recycle those holiday lights? How about for a great cause! Now you can recycle those burned out holiday lights rather than sending them to the landfill. Evidently the copper wire can be reused and a local company is providing...

‘Hawks Tackle Hunger This Sunday

If you plan on heading to the Seahawks vs.Lions game this Sunday at Qwest Field, keep in mind they will be collecting non-perishable food items (and cash of course). The donations will go to Northwest Harvest, which is the only statewide hunger relief organization. As the press release states, with unemployment in our state at 9%, the need has increased. Crossing November Days off the Calendar

Ever since my husband and I moved to the Seattle area (21 years ago!) I’ve never really had a problem with the weather, except during the month of November. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s dark by 4:30 and usually rains (not spits or drizzles like the rest of the winter but really rains HARD) or maybe it’s just the year begins to wind down and I begin the process of looking forward to the new year and SUN. A few weeks ago, my husband and I ventured out on a beautifully crisp Autumn Saturday to soak in some Puget Sound beauty. We drove to Titlow Beach, about a 40 minute drive from where we live in Maple Valley. Neither of us had ever visited this area, but the views were amazing and the smell of the salt water crisp. We had lunch at Steamers, where I enjoyed my favorite clams. The thing about the dark, dreary, rainy Northwest days is that they are easily forgotten. According to an article on CNN Money, Fortune Small Business has slotted our own Bellevue, WA in the top spot amount US cities which combine a sublime blend of business opportunity and recreational pursuit. The article cites Bellevue’s growing downtown and strong school system along with it’s ability to attract major retail as a few of the positive factors for the area.
